OBOABONA BACK IN TRAINING FOR ARGENTINA GAME

Super Eagles of Nigeria have received a boost with the return to fitness of defender Godfrey Oboabona, who had been out since their game against Iran.

The 23-year-old started their opening match alongside Kenneth Omeruo in central defence but was replaced in the 29th minute when he could not continue, following a stamp on his foot by an Iranian forward.

“I am ready to resume training today and the medics have given me a clean bill,” Oboabona said as the Super Eagles arrived in Porto Alegre where they will play against Argentina.

It is not yet known if coach Stephen Keshi will bring him back for the big group decider against the former champions or keep faith with the rhythm that has been formed between Omeruo and captain Joseph Yobo.

If he plays, Yobo will win his 100th cap, the first ever Nigerian to reach the century mark. He has spoken of not allowing the landmark to distract him from the task ahead.

“It is good news that I will reach that milestone but what is uppermost in my mind is for the team to win and for us to advance to the next stage. The rest will be a bonus”, he said.

Nigeria need at least one point from Wednesday’s match to reach the second round for the first time in 16 years
