Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic's goal against Southampton has entered into the Guinness World Records book for the longest goal scored in football at the Britannia Stadium last season (year 2013).
The 27-year-old’s strike from a long kick after just 13 seconds was measured at having travelled 91.9m, or 301ft 6in, which earned the shot-stopper a place in the record book’s latest edition.
The Bosnian put his side ahead just thirteen seconds into the match in bizarre fashion as opposition goalkeeper Artur Boruc misjudged his clearance, and the ball ended up in the back of the net, making Begović the fifth goalkeeper to score in Premier League history.
After the distance was verified, Begovic expressed his delight – and surprise – at picking up the accolade despite being a goalkeeper.
‘I feel amazing to be honoured in this way and as a goalkeeper I didn’t expect this to happen, not for this type of record anyway – I will take it though and enjoy it,’ he told Stoke’s official website.
‘I really do appreciate this award, and the certificate will certainly take pride of place on the wall at home.
‘So thank you to everyone at Guinness World Records for presenting me with this wonderful award.’
