Former Nigeria midfielder Austin Jay Jay Okocha has said the Super Eagles improved performance in the 1-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina deserve some commendation.
The former national team skipper who questioned the team and coach Stephen Keshi's tactics following Nigeria's 0-0 against Iran expressed his joy that the Eagles eventually broke the 16-year winless streak.
"Its been 16 years now we won last but Keshi and his boys derserves all credit," Okocha said onSuperSport.
"Though we criticized him (Keshi) a little after the first game, he has to take the credit becoming the first Nigerian coach to get a win in a World Cup tournament.
"The team showed a little bit of improvement, even though l said earlier that it was going to be a more suitable match for us to play Bosnia than Iran.
"But I think you have to win your match no matter how good or bad the team is and that is what we did on Sunday even though it was in a hard way.
"I'm happy for the team and for the coaching crew. That is what football is all about, if you do well you get the reward and if you don't, you will be rightly criticized," he continued.
The former Bolton Wanderers player also hopes that the African champions can reach the semi-final of the 2014 Fifa World Cup if they take their game one at a time.
"For our people its not just a game, its touches people lives. I dont think you know how many people the win have made happy and that will last them for weeks. Its amazing to see Nigerians believing in their team that they will get to the semi-finals.
"That's our wish and I hope it will come true but we will continue to get better as the compeitition goes on - at least the victory was an important one for us and have something to cheer for," he concluded.
