The coach of Atletico Madrid was given his marching orders by referee David Fernández Borbalán just 25 minutes into the action at the Vicente Calderón. Diego Simeone was sent to the stands for going overboard with his protests when his team found themselves briefly outnumbered as Juanfran was receiving treatment following a blow to the face.

Before Simeone left the touchline, the fiery Argentinian coach twice gently cuffed the fourth official on the back of the head and gestured to the fans to ramp up the volume. Germán 'El Mono' Burgos took over the duties in the dugout, while Simeone watched on from above.

Diego Simeone stated on Spanish television:"The tension got the better of me. I apologise to the referee if he took offence."

The Argentine focused on recent battles with 'Los Blancos'. He said: "We've won two out of three finals against them, although evidently the Champions League was very important".

He also emphasised the difficulties involved in trying to compete for La Liga with Real Madrid and Barcelona. "Over one or two games we all have options and chances, even if it's difficult. Over 38 games it's more difficult. Without having a good campaign Barcelona were right up there until the end [last year]. And Real too".

The Atlético coach also uttered words of encouragement about his players: "I'm happy with the lads. It's a group that keeps on fighting against everything".
