Victorious San Lorenzo to visit Pope Francis in Rome
Wild celebrations broke out in the stands of the Pedro Bidegain stadium and the streets of Buenos Aires's Boedo neighbourhood, when the final whistle blew on the Argentinian side's 1-0 win over Paraguayan outfit Nacional in the second leg of a momentous final - one between two teams that had never reached the showpiece before.
Club vice-chairman and big fish Marcelo Tinelli announced the entire San Lorenzo squad would travel to Rome to Pope Francis to celebrate the victory.
"We hope to be there with the Pope next week," an emotional Tinelli said following San Lorenzo's victory over Nacional de Paraguay in the final.
"We are going to take the cup, which is what we agreed with him," he added. "We are delighted to go and represent Argentine football, as he has supported us a lot."
Pope Francis is a proud supporter of San Lorenzo and is still a member of the club.
