Tests carried out on Neymar after complaining of pain in his left ankle have confirmed that the Brazilian has suffered a grade I sprain. According to Barça's doctors, the player's taking part in this Sunday's game against Elche (21:00) will depend on how quickly he recovers from his injury.

The Catalan club had announced Neymar's presence at the press conference this Friday, but due to this setback, Xavi Hernández took his place.

"Following the Thursday training session Neymar Jr. complained about some pain in his left ankle and tests have confirmed that the player has a Grade 1 ankle sprain," a statement on the official Barcelona website reads.

"The club's medical team has indicated that his return to training will depend on how the injury treatment evolves.

"It’s worth recalling that, last Monday, Neymar Jr. received his medical discharge from the back injury that he suffered during the World Cup in Brazil."

Last Monday, the forward was declared match-fit by the club's medical team after having fully recovered from the back injury he had picked up in Brazil, and played his first minutes of the pre-season in the Joan Gamper trophy game.

Neymar made 26 La Liga appearances last term, scoring nine goals in the process, but his campaign was plagued by fitness problems.
