PEC Zwolle shocked Ajax Amsterdam for the second time in as many cup finals as Stefan Nijland's lone strike gave the Bluefingers a 1-0 victory in the Dutch Super Cup at the Amsterdam ArenA.
PEC Zwolle beat Ajax 1-0 to win the Dutch Super Cup
The pre-season encounter was a rematch of April's KNVB Cup final in which Zwolle inflicted a sensational 5-1 hammering on Frank de Boer's Eredivisie winners in Rotterdam thereby denying Ajax a domestic double last season .
Ajax were out for revenge, but they would instead be thwarted in that quest and embarrassed in their own stadium.
Ajax looked dangerous early on but were then outplayed on their own pitch by their unfashionable opponents.
After getting away from defender Mike van der Hoorn in the 54th minute, Nijland collected Kamohelo Mokotjo's pass before beating Kenneth Vermeer to ensure Zwolle claimed the Johan Cruijff Shield.
The Dutch Super Cup between league champions and cup winners marks the start of the new season in the Netherlands.
