So far, there have been no reports of casualties. Shakhtar posted photos of the stadium on its website last Thursday to refute rumours of bombings. Saturday's explosions have sadly served to turn fiction into fact. The club broke the news of the shelling on their social networks, publishing pictures of the damage.

The region where the club's home ground is located has been one of those most affected in the territorial dispute raging between Russia and Ukraine. Six players did not return to the team for the pre-season because of the conflict.

Team coach, Mircea Lucescu, and the rest of the club management had already decided on a change of venue to hold training sessions and matches this season in order to get away from the problems in Donetsk.

The team is playing away against Obolon-Brovar for the Ukrainian Cup today.
