According to sports website 'Canchallena', the former Barcelona manager agreed - after a two-hour meeting - to take over from Alejandro Sabella on a four-year deal until the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, interim AFA president, Luis Segura declined to confirm his appointment. "We haven't made our decision yet. When we choose a coach, whether that be Martino or someone else, we'll make the announcement at a press conference. We aren't going to talk about everything that happened", said Segura.

Martino was chosen by Julio Grondona to succeed Sabella. The influential Argentine football boss confirmed as much just hours before he died last week.

51-year-old Martino was chosen based on his track record as Paraguay's national coach, his successful stint in charge of Newell's Old Boys and his recent experience at Barcelona which allowed him to build a close relationship with Messi and Mascherano who are key players in the Argentina squad.

According to Argentine sports newspaper 'Olé', some of the issues yet to be discussed with Martino are his salary, the role of the national teams' secretary, Billardo and the management of Argentina's youth teams.

The clock is ticking to appoint a new national coach due to Argentina's upcoming commitments. They face Germany - the team that knocked them out of this summer's World Cup - in a friendly on 3rd September in Düsseldorf.
