Mexico's Rafael Márquez, captain of his country's team at the Brazil World Cup, has been transferred to Italian side Verona, as was confirmed by León, his Mexican club.
Mexico's Márquez signs for Verona
"Rafael Márquez has been transferred to Hellas Verona of the Italian Serie A league, and we hope that this new stage of his life is full of successes", read a statement from the current Mexican double winners.
Márquez, 35, is a defender who has played for Atlas in Mexico, Monaco in the French league, Red Bulls in New York and he then returned to Mexico, joining León.
Along with the Mexico team, he played in his fourth successive World Cup in Brazil this summer, having also gone to Korea/Japan in 2002, Germany in 2006 and South Africa in 2010.
"I have started on a new challenge in my career", he said in a message which appeared in the Mexican media. "It has not been easy to take this decision, as there are a lot of feelings involved, but I have always been up for a challenge and never being afraid of failure, and at my age I can't let a chance like this slip".
According to the daily paper El Afición, the agreement between Márquez and Verona is for one year with an option of a second. Márquez is already on his way to Italy.
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, at the very end of the last 16 match between Mexico and Holland, Márquez was judged by the referee to have fouled Arjen Robben, even though he said he never touched him. A penalty was given; Holland scored, making the score 2-1 and knocking Mexico out of the competition.
