Nigeria's lawmakers tells Chris Giwa to vacate NFF seat
The House of Representatives committee on sports declared in a statement that the August 26 elective congress that brought Giwa into office as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president "did not conform to NFF statutes/regulations."
The sports committee stated that it observed after a three-day interactive session with various stakeholders of the Nigerian football house "that the agenda for the congress of August 26, 2014 was a non-elective congress as attested to by the Notice of NFF General Assembly issued by the General Secretary referenced NFF/GSO/Gen/Vol.XIII/118."
It also identified that the "NFF Statutes 28(4) provides that such agenda shall not be altered which is supported by Fifa provision."
The lawmakers now want "all interested parties to have to recourse to the advice contained in Fifa letter of 3rd September 2014."
The House of Representatives also advised the NFF congress to start a new road map for "an election that will allow eligible Nigerians to participate freely and fairly."
On Wednesday, troubled factional NFF president Giwa told the House of Representatives committee on sports that only the NFF appeals committee or the Court of Arbitration for Sports (Cas) can convince him to leave office if they declare his election null and void.
"If there is anyone that is aggrieved about the elections that brought me into office, the person has a right to appeal because there is the appeals committee. I say it with all sincerity that if the appeals committee or even the Court of Arbitration for Sports says that my election is quashed, I will not spend one more day in office," Giwa said during the third day of the public hearing on Wednesday.
Fifa on Wednesday handed Nigeria a final deadline till Monday morning, directing that the Giwa-led NFF vacate the offices of the football federation, and also stop "claiming to be the legitimate president and members of the NFF."
Failure to adhere to Fifa's directive will lead to an automatic suspension which could affect Nigeria's defence of their Africa Cup of Nations title.
