Three weeks after the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, all attention shift to another group of teams that will be battling it out at the 2014 FIFA U-20 women’s World Cup in Canada. The women's world championship is billed to take place between August 5 to August 24.
Artificial turf for Canada 2014
Matches will take place in four cities across the country: Montreal, Edmonton, Moncton and Toronto. And for the first time in a FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, the playing surface will be FIFA-certified football turf in three of the four stadiums, Montreal, Edmonton and Moncton, with natural grass only being used in Toronto.
In the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, the pitch was made by FIFA Preferred Producer FieldTurf Inc. and was installed in 2010. Thanks to regular and proper care it still meets the requirements of the FIFA Quality Programme. The pitches in Moncton (also supplied by FieldTurf Inc.) and in the Olympic Stadium in Montreal (supplied by FIFA Preferred Producer Act Global) were newly installed this year and will be thoroughly tested before the start of the tournament.
The particular geographic and climatic conditions in Canada mean it is more expedient to play on artificial turf. For example, outdoor grass pitches in Edmonton and Moncton cannot be used during the long cold winter months. Then there is the fact that the Olympic Stadium in Montreal is a covered arena meaning that a natural grass pitch would not get enough sunlight. In addition, most of the pitches are also used as multi-sports fields for other sports such as American or Canadian football.
This youth tournament starts the countdown to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 which will also be hosted by Canada next June and July, when all matches and all training sessions will take place on FIFA 2 Star RECOMMENDED football turf in the six venues, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Moncton.
