JUDGE REJECT A REQUEST TO DISMISS MESSI FRAUD TRIAL

A judge in the city of Barcelona has rejected a request from the public prosecutor's office to dismiss the fraud case against Lionel Messi and ordered that the trial go ahead.

The Argentina international looks set to be tried alongside his father, Jorge Messi, for three counts of fraud against the Tax Agency.

The judge in the city of Barcelona issued a writ upholding the charges against the Barcelona star and gave public prosecutors ten days to request the opening of oral proceedings or the dismissal of the trial.

The judge rejected calls by prosecutors to dismiss the case against Leo Messi and to only try his father because he believes that there is "sufficient reason" to suggest that the player "could have known about and consented to the creation and maintenance of a fictitious company structure, whose sole aim was to evade the fulfilment of tax obligations resulting from the income generated from the exploitation of his image rights."
