Filomena Aveiro, Cristiano Ronaldo's grandmother on his father's side, passed away in a hospital in Portugal on Tuesday after being admitted several weeks ago, the player's family have announced.
The Real Madrid player, who is currently on holiday, published a message on the social networks to pay tribute to her: "Grandma, you'll always be in my heart. Rest in peace, love from all of your grandchildren."
The local press reported the passing of Filomena Aveiro, who suffered from Alzheimer's – amongst other illnesses – and lived at her home on the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, where her grandson was also born.
One of Ronaldo's sisters, Kátia Aveiro – famous for being a singer – was the first to announce the news on the social networks.
"The inevitable and expected has happened, although we are never prepared to receive the news that a loved one has gone. My father's mother was suffering and had been fighting several illnesses which had affected her for many years.
