The Vatican Information Service has also revealed that the inter-faith match for peace will take place at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Other current players to get the call include Italians Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon, Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o and Yuto Nagatomo of Japan.

There is also room for some now-retired players who are still more than capable of putting on a performance. Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, Italian Roberto Baggio and Argentine Javier Zanetti, who all made a big impact on Serie A in their playing careers, will all make an appearance at the star-studded event.

Zanetti, who brought his glittering career to an end in May, suggested organising a "sporting event that brings people of different religions together" when he met the Pope last year alongside the rest of the Argentina national team.

Tickets for the match go on sale this Friday and the proceeds will go to "Scholas Occurrentes", an educational organisation supported by the Argentine Pope, and Zanetti's "PUPI" foundation, which helps children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Pope Francis is a confessed football fan and member of Argentine club San Lorenzo.
