Barcelona's Lionel Messi has become the first ever taxpayer in Spain to cough up €53m in one tax year. That figure is likely to rise by a further €3m because of a probable fine for not declaring image rights for three years.

According to figures released in 'La Vanguardia', the €53m for this year includes tax on his salary and image rights for 2013 as expected. Some €22.4m of the total was tax from undeclared image rights in the three previous years and there was also €1m to pay in wealth tax.
