BECKENBAUER SHOCKED WITH LAHM'S DECISION TO QUIT GERMANY'S NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer, Bayern Munich's honorary president, is at a loss to explain Philipp Lahm's decision to retire from international football, giving up the captaincy in the process.

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer shocked with Lahm's decision to quit Germany's national football team

"I would have understood it from a number of players, but not from Philipp Lahm", 'Der Kaiser' stated. "He's not burnt out; he still has plenty to offer at the age of 30. He is more than capable of using his energy wisely, regardless of his position on the pitch".

"Yes, he won the World Cup, but that's not a reason to quit the national team", added Beckenbauer, who skippered 'Die Mannschaft' to the trophy in 1974 and coached them to glory in 1990.

"The team still needs him. He is the leader of this squad. It will be very tough to replace him", stressed the former sweeper supreme.
