FIFA INSIST ON SUAREZ'S BAN

Following a letter from CONMEBOL to FIFA asking for a reduction in the sentence dished out to Luis Suárez, another letter - this time in the opposite direction - made it very clear that the sanction imposed would not be altered and that bodies implementing the ruling will have the full backing of the world football authority.

FIFA responded to CONMEBOL Secretary General, José Luis Meiszner, by means of a missive issued in Zurich on Tuesday 22nd July that "took into account the dissatisfaction expressed by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL)", but made few concessions.

"In this way, we remind you that the various legal bodies representing FIFA will act with complete independence when adopting any decision, and will not be influenced by any petition to the contrary," the missive continued, making reference to specific articles in FIFA's Disciplinary Code.
